David looked around him as he made his way down the sidewalk of the French Quarter, trying to take in all the sights at once. He couldn't help thinking that even though he'd been in this city over a year, he was woefully naive about just how much this part of the city had to offer. He hadn't really gotten out a lot since he'd moved into his house in the Garden District and taken over the bookshop from his cousin; he'd spent so much time restocking the place, taking inventory, and making sure that the donations he received from various people in the area were taken care of and carefully catalogued that he really hadn't gotten out much. In fact, he'd only gotten around to joining the local theater group a few days ago, and that was something he'd meant to do when he'd first arrived in New Orleans.
( There was a lot that he hadn't had a chance to do yet ) |

Kevin peered into the fridge trying to make a decision on what to make for dinner. There were a few vegetables which were starting to look a little wilted so he decided a simple noodle stir fry would use them up. He grabbed them all, a large knife, and started to chop. It was an easy quick dinner and he figured he'd be eating in front of the television within ten minutes.
Trent had hovered outside Kevin's door for several minutes trying to get the courage up to knock. He'd had a few drinks but they felt like nowhere near enough. Do it now or go home, he told himself and reached up to give a couple solid of raps on the door.
( Hey guys this old balding dude thought I actually wanted him ) |

Kevin watched the young guy pause in the doorway and felt like calling, "Don't bother, all old fart music here." However, as usual he waited patiently for the inevitable Dude your records are gay comment.
The inside of the shop was calling Ville with the same urgency he felt when looking at old paintings. The guy behind the counter was looking at him curiously. Ville could feel what he was thinking: What are you doing here? He smiled and nodded, used to shop owners looking down their noses at him and telling him to steal or get his drugs elsewhere. "Good morning."
Now he's a polite one! Kevin thought. "Good morning, it's a bit cooler today," he said in reaction to the guy's fingerless gloves. He didn't really know what else to say.
( I hope you are Kevin because if yes, you've been recommended to me. ) |

I was in the grocery store buying a bottle of wine to go with dinner when I overheard two young guys talking. Apart from saying Jagermeister was the coolest drink in the universe, they happened to mention it was Trent's birthday.
How many Trents can there be?
Then when they mentioned Missing Mile and guitars and...
I wish I had the guts to go give him a present or have dinner or...
Happy Birthday Trent |

As they approached the club Kevin held in a gasp as he saw the long queue of people waiting outside. He had been walking alongside Jake psyching himself up that he could do this. However, now he was here and saw how many people were waiting simply to get in his resolve quickly melted. It was not only the size of the line which fed his reserve but the look of the punters. They were all so young, most painfully skinny with low slung tight black jeans or a variety of leather and latex. Their hair was a mixture of black streaked with a hotch potch of purples and bright reds. It didn't help that a young girl barely sixteen he would say wearing a black bustier and one of the shortest pvc skirts he had ever seen came up to him and smiled. "Hey I think your daughter was looking for you. There was some chick who said she left her cell in her dad's car. I think she's over there somewhere," she pointed helpfully. Kevin shot Jake a helpless look. He did not belong here.

My apologies to my writing partner widdershin for messing up the order with this post. It should have gone before the last post Kevin made on his journal with Jake. My bad everyone.

Jake frowned when Kevin moved away and headed over to the booth as soon as he'd served the waiting customer. He slid into the booth opposite and said, "What's up Kev? And don't give me the 'nothing' shit."
Kevin bit his lip and took a sip of his coffee. "Awful as usual," he joked. He shot Jake a weak grin, and knowing that the ever friendly and well meaning young man would not let him get away with this. "I have a question but..."

For once Kevin actually scanned the floor of the Bayou Bar before he entered. He was hoping Trent might be there. He had no conscious thought of why except that he had actually enjoyed talking to him. Don't be stupid, he won't turn up Kevin reprimanded himself and went up to the bar. At least Viggo was on duty, he was always ready with a smile and a double scotch for the price of a single.

Christmas has never been a terribly favourite time of mine. It sort of cruelly points out that you don't have anyone.
I used to quite enjoy Christmas Eve though. I'd have a little drink and my dog and I would sit together on the couch by the fire and watch crap TV. She even developed a liking for my Bobby Darin DVD. Well, that's what I liked to think anyway.
This year though I'm sitting in my place and all I can hear is the whooping and yelling from Bourbon Street as people enjoy themselves. I don't have my little girl any more so there's just me.
There's a line of cards on the mantel but they're from supply companies so I don't think they count. |

Delivered to Espressoholic the following gift

with the attached message
Dear Jake,
I overheard the waitresses talking and heard it was your birthday. I saw this and thought you might like it.
It's by a local artist. The dog is called Button and apparently if she had the chance she would prefer to be carried around the park rather than walk.
You seem a caring person who would do that for someone like her.
I hope you have a wonderful birthday Jake.
Thank you for your help the other night.

Kevin lay on the couch, a half eaten donut on the coffee table. He laughed out loud as Niles was once again off put by Eddy staring at him. He loved Frasier, there couldn't be enough re runs as far as he was concerned.
"Hang on Poppy ... this is the place," Trent said to the dog happily pulling on the lead to keep travelling down the sidewalk. When she bounced over to nudge his hand he scratched her ear and knocked lightly on the door.
( Trent? he asked shocked to see who was there. ) |

Colin stood in front of the books on the wall of shelves, oblivious to the general hubbub in the store around him. He moved along looking for a book by Alex Tardio, realizing he didn't have the man's latest release and now with a slightly higher interest in reading it. Mumbling to himself, the sound indiscernible to anyone around him he stared across the covers and spines of the literary offerings of the newsagency.
Kevin clutched his Record Collector and stood in front of the pet section biting his lip. It was ridiculous to buy a dog magazine when he didn't own a dog. But the cover picture was so cute, and reminded him of his last dog.
( You okay? Can I help you find something? ) |

The streets were busier and Niki knew it was about the second worst time of the day to run, but the early morning torrential downpour had been more than she could handle that morning, having had a disturbed night's sleep. With the clients she had booked that day, and a charity function she'd been asked to attend by the organisers that evening, she knew she wouldn't get a chance to run any other time. So she braved the early morning pedestrian and vehicle traffic, managing to duck and weave her way through her run. She'd slowed to a jog as she'd come into the busier area but was still keeping up a steady pace, side-stepping a slow pedestrian, toward the shop fronts she was passing.
( Kevin walked along the street, balancing his latte in one hand and an umbrella in the other. ) |

[Takes place after this]
Kevin padded through to the lounge room one more time. He had been up and down out of bed to check on Trent more times than he could count during the night. Trent was still sleeping, although Kevin could see that at some stage he had used the bowl he had placed by the couch. He picked it up and threw it in the trash, and then went back to look at the sleeping form. He seemed to be at peace, so Kevin quietly went back through to the kitchen to get some aspirin and water ready. Trent would be sure to need them. He put the coffee pot on as well, for himself but also in case a hit of caffeine would help if Trent woke up.
( Oh fuck! ) |
